mini tldr bios for the girlies, a slow wip 👉👉

emma is from boston and the only child of john dunster, a semi-wealthy businessman who owns and runs a shipping company. emma dreams of running the company one day, much to her father's chagrin. the year of her twentieth birthday, she was sent to london by her father to stay with her aunt and cousins for the duration of the social season in the hopes that she’ll find someone to marry--and make her forget her dreams of taking over the family business. she's a spitfire and often outspoken and feisty, but she's warmhearted and loyal to a fault.

iris is the fourth child of six. her and her sisters are sometimes (lovingly) referred to as the Smythe-Smith Bouquet, due to their names (Rose, Marigold, Lavender, Iris, Daisy). she has a form of leucism that makes her hair and skin lack melanin and she is often described as "strikingly pale". her hair is blonde and her eyelashes are very light, but not quite white, making her almost ghostly at times. she is also closeted bisexual. both of these only prove to make her feel like an outcast among her own family. she despises performing for the smythe-smith musicales but hates the idea of marrying a man she doesn't know even more. she's shy and closed off, but she has a big heart and bigger ideas.

sarah is the eldest of the four pleinsworth daughters and cousin to the smythe-smith family. she is confident and witty but often comes across as selfish and brash. she is caring and passionate once her walls are breached, but one has to brave through the thickets of her outer exterior (and the muddy waters of her siblings) to get to know the real sarah. she is utterly devoted to her family and sees familial loyalty as the most important thing, next to always being right.

relations: honoria smythe-smith (cousin, best friend), iris smythe-smith (cousin). verse dependent: hugh prentice (husband)

honoria is the younger sister of daniel smythe-smith, the earl of winstead, baron touchton of stoke, and viscount streathermore. her brother was chased out of the country after a duel went wrong and honoria longs for the day her brother is allowed to return home. in his stead, daniel's best friend marcus, the earl of chatteris, is given the duty of watching over honoria. marucs, however, doesn't think any suitor is good enough for honoria and often pays the men to give up or threatens them, leaving honoria unmarried and frustrated with life. she is fiercely loyal to her family and would do anything to protect them. she is very close with her cousins, specifically sarah with whom she shares everything with.

i really liked the friendship btwn honoria, sarah, and iris, and i'm glad it was present in all of the books (except understandably anne's (#2)) 🥹

hugh mega slayed, but i think it also helped that quinn was building up his character over the course of the two books before him too :'D

richard is a hottie but he's so stupid LMFAO

i just realized we never got a fishing scene w daniel and anne even tho anne said she loved fishing 😢😢😢

i also wish there was more musical discussion 😆 i was kind of expecting that from iris's book since she's supposed to be the best musician, but i also understand that quinn probably wouldn't want to do too much research there and/or mess smth up hahaha

this series definitely showed off her ex-medical school student knowledge which was cool!!!!! loved the surgery scene(s) in "just like heaven," and the inclusion/description(s) of hugh's leg injury in "the sum of all kisses"!!

She wouldn't blame him if he never wanted to speak to her again, it was the exact thing she deserved. And yet she couldn't help but hope he'd at least meet her gaze, that they could have even a silent conversation where she could plead for forgiveness with her eyes.

Anne remained standing, hiding herself behind the pianoforte and attempting to case her gaze out the window. Was a fall from this height enough to kill her? Surely not. Perhaps a few broken bones and a couple of bruises. Both of which seemed pleasurable compared to the torment her young pupil was insistent on inflicting upon her.

She couldn’t even bring herself to look at him, knowing all too well that seeing his face would bring another weight of guilt crashing down. Instead, she merely hoped Frances would be occupied enough with the commotion to not notice her governess keeping to the walls and far away from the gaggle of young girls.

Without looking, Anne heard Daisy’s voice as she nearly skipped over to Ben, welcoming him in with a characteristic Smythe-Smith smile. Against her better judgement, Anne spared a glance to them, and her heart sunk when she saw Ben smiling back. Of course he was. What man didn’t enjoy being fawned over by beautiful young women? Even if he was just being polite, Anne couldn’t quell the rising tide of anguish that was brewing.

Daisy, she could handle. It was only a matter of time before the girl put her own foot in her mouth with her chattering, but she was more surprised to notice Lady’s Sarah’s apparent shyness. Had Anne ever seen Sarah act shy before? Even in front of Hugh Prentice, Sarah bore a smile, albeit it was often forced and practiced. But with Ben, she appeared to be radiating elegance even amidst the light flush on her face.

Anne bit at the inside of her cheek, desperate for something, anything to ground her to the moment. If she didn’t know any better, she’d contemplate slipping out the door and waiting until the girls were done with their show to return. But Anne was technically considered their chaperone in this moment, and despite her desperation to flee the scene, she was bound by duty and admiration for the family that she worked beneath.

“Miss Wynter, come sit so we can start the show!” Frances proclaimed loudly as she stood beside a clearly nervous Harriet. Without the proper time and energy dedicated to perfecting her new work, Harriet felt far more embarrassed than she normally would have. But it was a special thing to have an audience, to have eyes and ears that didn’t belong to people she saw every second of every day.

Anne’s chest tightened upon seeing Harriet in such form. Harriet was a sweet girl, and as much as Anne knew she would rather avoid this situation altogether, she’d go through with it for her sister’s sake.

“I can see perfectly fine over here, Frances, worry not.” She offered a smile, but the corners of her lips quivered as her eyes brushed over Ben and his companions.

Why was she so jealous? She didn’t lay claim to him. In fact, she’d done quite the opposite. As if I’d even want you to kiss me. She had hurled nothing but venomous words at him nonstop and now she was jealous that he was preferring kinder company over her? Good God, Annelise, grow up.

Before she could think of anything else to worry herself over, Frances had run over and was tugging her by the hand, leading her over to the sitting area and, in particular, to the sofa where Ben and the ladies sat. Anne looked at Frances with a quizzical expression. There was no room on the sofa she’d brought her to, so what exactly did Frances expect her to do? Lean on the arm of the couch? Sit on Ben’s lap? The sudden thought strikes her as alluring and she silently scolds herself for being so idiotic.

Thankfully, Frances didn’t seem to care where Anne sat, as long as it were painfully close to Ben. If she didn’t know any better, she’d think her student was trying to make them talk to one another. She might think that Frances was beginning to take after her siblings and daring to play matchmaker for her governess.

“I apologize in advance, sir. My sisters enjoy embarrassing people.” Sarah cooed, fluttering her lashes and looking as coy as Anne had ever seen her. Sarah Pleinsworth was not a delicate girl, and yet she seemed to be nothing less in front of Ben. And Daisy… Well, Daisy was Daisy, and Anne couldn’t think of anything more to accuse her of.

“Do you like music, mister?” Daisy posed the question and a small eruption of comments flooded in. Each girl seemed to have their own opinion on music and each seemed more than eager to share it with their handsome guest. Anne bristled and crossed her arms over her chest, unsure of how to behave in such a situation. She was the chaperone, the adult in the room and yet she felt as flustered as—if not more than—the other young ladies swarming the fresh meat.

“We’re about to start!” Frances began, but it seemed as though only Anne had heard her among the commotion. With pride, Anne watched as the young girl gathered her hands in front of her and tried again, far louder this time. “Ladies and gentleman!” All heads snapped to attention and Anne stifled a smile as Frances seemed all too pleased with the reaction. “Welcome to the world premiere of The Frog Prince and the Fairy Princess.”

Anne paled and nervously shot a glance at Ben, who she hoped hadn’t been paying attention enough to notice. Would he even pick up on it, if the play ended up being what Anne thought it would be? Or was she the only one dwelling over the loss of such a relationship? Mourning the friend she had pushed away with all her might? Ben certainly didn’t seem lonely between the charmed gazes of his companions and it made Anne’s lips twitch as she tried to maintain a calm façade.

As Harriet stepped forward to add on to her sister’s announcement, Daisy turned to listen, clumsily taking Ben’s hand in her own. Sarah, taking note of the idea, followed suit and grabbed Ben’s other hand in her own. This was wrong, Anne should’ve spoken up to stop it. Neither of the girls were wearing gloves, clearly not expecting such a visitor, but she couldn’t seem to find the words to speak. If he allowed the girls to breach such conduct around him, then perhaps he was more of the man she thought he was. Perhaps he was just as shallow as she'd claimed. Swallowing the rising emotion in her chest, Anne flicked her gaze to Harriet, who had finished her small speech and was readying herself for the moment the show began.

But Frances, instead of doing the same, was once more pulling on Anne’s arm and guiding her over to center ‘stage’. Anne's mouth fell open, muttering some half-hearted excuses about why she couldn't act in this one, despite knowing that Frances insisted her governess take part in all Harriet's plays.

Was it too late to leave? Perhaps Anne could call a maid or servant to come chaperone while she hid herself away in her bedchamber. If she feigned an illness, no one would mind. No one would care, especially not Sarah, who was the only one on the room who might’ve been privy enough to faking sicknesses. But Anne had no such luck and it seemed as though the universe was intent on making her suffer for her actions.

She stood silently, hands clenching and unclenching as she fought to ignore Ben’s presence. She must’ve appeared as nervous as she felt, or perhaps even riddled with stage fright, for Frances was kind enough to smile and offer some words of support.

“Don’t worry, you don’t have to memorize any lines yet. Just stand there and smile.”

Anne wasn’t too nervous to miss the word yet and it only made her stomach sink further. Not only would she have to pretend to be a completely composed adult, but now she would be expected to act a character she had no prior warning of. The only thing she would pray for now was that Frances didn't plan on inviting Ben onto 'stage' with her. Anne wasn't sure she'd be able to handle such a thing.

“Once upon a time, there was a beautiful Fairy Princess.” Anne’s cheeks flared as Harriet spoke with the dramatics of a Shakespearean character. This was going to be horrible, Anne knew it, and yet she stood firm, not wanting to disappoint either the playwrights or to make herself look like a bigger fool in front of Ben.

This was a bad idea. Benjamin was chock-full of them lately, but this? This was downright asinine, and the worst part was he knew full-well that it was foolish. Anne taught the Pleinsworth girls, so it would stand to reason that she would be present for this performance, as well. And if she was, could he truly bear being within the same vicinity? Or rather, could she?

Trying his best to maintain a semblance of dignity, Benjamin followed the footman toward the drawing room area, where the older man announced him in a voice that almost sounded bored.

On the other side of the door, he could hear Frances' chipper voice, followed by... Good Lord, were there multiple young girls in there? He knew all too well that she had sisters, of course, but there seemed to be a touch too many to be just the Pleinsworth girls.

Good going, jingle brains, he irritably thought. What was the bloody point of this affair if he ended up making a complete fool of himself?

Before he could think to recant, Benjamin was shown into the room, and he forced a bright smile upon his face. It was only his eyes that showed any distress, and with a polite bow to the young women present -- all but Anne, whom he was vigorously trying to avoid -- he greeted, "Good morning, ladies. I didn't realize I'd be in for the treat of additional company. If he were here, I daresay my best friend would be quite jealous."

Flattery, Benjamin found, was often the easiest way to win over a group of strangers -- most especially the female elite -- and still keeping his eyes trained upon everyone present but Anne, he stepped forward and offered Frances his hand. "Thank you again for inviting me, Miss Pleinsworth. As a tremendous fan of the arts, I've been able to think of little else."

Ever dutiful, Frances took his hand and shook it, beaming as she gestured toward one of the settees. "Why don't you sit with Miss Wynter?" she suggested. Catching the horror on his face, she persisted, "You must, you must! You'll soon see why!"

"But..." Clearing his throat, Benjamin briefly darted his eyes toward Anne, held her gaze for far too long, and then quickly looked for someone, anyone with whom he could divert. Upon spotting Daisy and Sarah nearby, he extended his arm and insisted, "Er, actually, I was hoping to have the honor of acquainting myself with your sister and cousin. Miss Wynter has had such delightful, charming things to say about them, so naturally, I wished to see for myself."

He straightened and attempted to make his smile more natural. "Perhaps I should sit between them, seeing how I couldn't possibly choose with whom to speak first."

"It's a figure of speech, Mister Tallmadge. Do they not use sarcasm in the Colonies? No tea and no sarcasm. I can't imagine what the ladies possibly do for fun, in that case." She crossed her arms over her chest as she teased, but when he spoke, Sarah felt her chest clench. The chances of her experiencing love were not high. Not real love, at least. She might grow to care for her husband, like her own mother had, and she would certainly adore her own children, but Sarah couldn't imagine any man falling in love with her, and vice versa. The men that took interest in her were stricken in years and often unwed for a plethora of reasons. And the eligible bachelors that would suit the eldest Pleinsworth daughter didn't seem to be bothered to look in her direction.

She wanted to blame her cousin Daniel for her extended stay on the marriage mart, but Sarah loved her family and she could never hold a grudge towards him. But Lord Prentice could certainly be to blame. If the drama with Daniel and Hugh hadn't taken place, Sarah wouldn't have been forced to debut a year later. As easy as it was to blame others for her failures, Sarah knew that there was clearly something wrong with her. And if losing a suitor to her sisters' governess was anything to go off, she was certainly the problem.

She is remarkable. Sarah smirked, letting out a nasally exhale. "I can't tell if you mean my sister or Miss Wynter. For your sake, I'll assume its the latter."

Averting her gaze, Sarah nodded along with his words. Anne Wynter had been an invaluable asset to her family, whether she knew it or not. Although Sarah herself hadn't spent much time under her tutelage, she knew how caring the woman was and it was clear how much her younger sisters adored their governess. Miss Wynter had been the one to urge Harriet to write more and encouraged Frances in her creativity. Her sisters had bloomed under the guidance of Anne and losing her would be a detriment to them all.

But, if it was true love between the two of them, then it would last until Frances was uncaged and released into society. If the feelings were true, they would still love one another years later. And, if not, at least Miss Wynter would always have a place in the Pleinsworth home.

I haven't put on a good show since my college days.

"Neither has Harriet, so it might work in your favor. Besides," She sighed, giving a dramatic wave of her hand. "We couldn't expect anyone else to be the Frog Prince. You were born for the role. Or, rather, the role was born for you."

"Steal her?" Benjamin echoed, defensive. "Miss Pleinsworth, it is not stealing if you love someone -- and truly, I pray you will experience that someday. Perhaps then you will understand why I've become so foolish and out of my element, and all for the sake of just one scrap of Miss Wynter's affection."

No matter how much Benjamin wished Sarah to be incorrect, she was right: it would be a cruelty, were he to peel Anne away from the ones she loved, from the job she loved, simply because he wished to return home. Could he truly expect her to leave just because it was what he desired?

"Frances still has many years left in her schooling and Mama would never be able to find another governess of Miss Wynter’s caliber. I understand that your heart belongs to her, and perhaps hers to you, but she has responsibilities that she must commit to, love notwithstanding.”

"She is remarkable," Benjamin softly agreed. "I, myself, would behave much the same, were I in your shoes...but Miss Pleinsworth, why must you act as if I'm some scheming villain? If Miss Wynter and I leave together to the colonies, it will be with her strictest permission. And if I don't believe she would happy, I would never force her to leave. I know all too well how deeply she loves you girls."

Sarah was immovable. “Even after Frances debuts, I have a feeling she won’t be able to let her go so easily. And Harriet will need all the actors she can collect. You included.”

"Me?" Benjamin echoed, chuckling in spite of himself. "Well, be careful what you wish for, I always say... I haven't put on a good show since my college days." Expression softening, he sighed and smoothed a hand along his weskit. "This isn't the end," he promised. "Even if we were to leave, we wouldn't just never return. Your family is a part of us...Anne and I aren't just the type to forget those we love and hold dear."
